Title: Additions to the Smilies thread
Post by: Bob in a quantum-state-of-faith on December 07, 2006, 05:40:49 PM
In another thread, re-posted here.  :D

How easy is it to modify the list of smilies we have quick-and-easy access to?

Oooh! Oooh! can we get a candle (or three) smiley added to the list of smilies?

That would be too cool.

Oooh, that's an idea that has encouraged me to get my GIF-animator out.  I'll see what I can come up with, as I already half-promised to disappear the background ... ::)

Over in another HOT thread, I posted this:

Quote from: Bob in a quantum-state-of-faith on December 08, 2006, 04:58:00 PM
That was too easy, with Jasic software's animation shop -- there was a simple "resize animation" command.  ;D

Here is a tiny candle, suitable for Icon-izing.

It is royalty-free image, and we may use it for non-commercial use.

I've got it on my photobucket account presently, but a simple right-click and save as should do the trick-- else PM me, and I'll be happy to e-mail it direct.

Here it is outside of the quotes, just in case:

Didn't we have him at one time?  Should be an easy mod by hybridizing with the barfing FSM I did.  I was thinking a passed-out one (still holding pint).  We definitely need a discombobulated one, plus the standard set.  Gotta spend some time stringing them together.

Here is a quick pirate toadfish I just whipped up.  Sorry it does not have transparency, I don't have access to anything but MS Paint at work.  If someone would like to fix that it would be great, plus I hope Aggie does not mind that I have used his excellent toadie as a starting point.

Sibling Bluenose

Edit:  Actually, set the transparency to the purple colour in the second one so we don't wipe out the eye and white parts of his hat.  BN

Nice job, Bluenose!

Can catch the transparancy tomorrow.... no transparency ability at home!  MS Photo Editor is the simple way (I use Paint to draw).  I've got PSP X here but haven't conquered it yet.

Anyone who wants to help make Taddies, please do.  I can post a shwack of basic faces I did for a multi-appendage'd emo-pastacon sometime.

He he!

All a bit of fun eh?

If anyone wants me to animate something, just ask, I'm more than happy to oblige.

Either give me an original and what you want it to do, or you can give me the frames as a series of single image GIF (or whatever) and I will put them into an animated GIF file for you.  The second option is likely to be quicker, but simple animations do not take very long anyway.

Poor lil' fellah- hee hee!

What if the blup started at the mouth and travelled downward frame by frame. The mouth could open and close slightly too. Plus, ya gotta have a tongue hanging out. It aint puking unless the tongue's hanging out.
Title: Re: Additions to the Smilies thread
Post by: Aggie on March 09, 2007, 11:02:35 PM
This is the same stream as the old FSM puker...   it creates a 'cascade' effect since the "stream" is effectively a continuous band that moves downward at 4 pixels/frame IIRC.  The edges are randomly raggedized, though, and the stream length changes over the frames so that it goes in surges.

On the tongue... trying to visualize how one manages to yack from under the tongue...  my vomit usually goes over the top. ;)
Title: Re: Additions to the Smilies thread
Post by: Opsa on March 09, 2007, 11:08:32 PM
Well, naturally the tongue would be under the cascading blup and panting in and out.

Okay, okay- that would take the entire staff at Disney to accomplish!

Title: Re: Additions to the Smilies thread
Post by: Bluenose on March 23, 2007, 06:08:28 AM
I told her that I had accused you of giving it to me over the web and she laughed.  So I guess she has forgiven me.  Actually, since she works in a hospital - she's the bookings office in the theatre suite of a local private hospital - it's usually her that brings something home to share with me, so it's really just sweet revenge. ;)

Mind you , I think Margot was just about ready to murder me a couple of nights ago, apparently my constant coughing, snuffling and so on kept her up all night.  It probably doesn't help the situation that when the tables are turned I can sleep through anything.  Margot can even get up, turn on the light and the TV in the bedroom without fear of waking me.  Even if she does, I can just go straight back to sleep.  I think that burns her more than anything.

Anyway my head's feeling a bit better this afternoon, and fortunately I am coughing less - fortunate because when I do cough it hurts like hell.  I think I have strained my diaphragm muscles, not fun.

Oh well, one major consolation is at least we can always come here and get some sympathy!

I would like to request of the talented emoticon creators, a waving smudge stick icon.

Smudge sticks are used by some earth-oriented religions to clear and purify the air. (They would come in handy after a barfer or troll visit.)

They are a small bundle of dried herbs (it will be tricky to avoid having them look like some sort of spliff- make sure they're light green and bushy) which is smouldering and smoking at one end.

Anyone care to rise to the challenge?

For anthrobabe.

Not quite a a smiley holding a stick to poke things with as you requested in the chant box.... but when looking for one I found this....

:bop:

but then I found this:

:stick:

and one I like.....  :kickbutt: which someone else was asking for?

.....and naturally every time an emoticon is added, another beer one must be too:

:downit:

(actually I think it is guiness but what the heck)

I cant help it, :bees: just makes me think of certain threads in Human Concerns this summer...  ::)

Think, just to be able to write : "I just think you are :bees: for fun". ;)

A blushing/happy smiley would be nice (something like http://forums.gottadeal.com/images/smilies/redface.gif (http://forums.gottadeal.com/images/smilies/redface.gif) ), because sometimes  :-[  just sends the wrong message. And I would like a heart smiley too ( http://forums.gottadeal.com/images/smilies/wub.gif (http://forums.gottadeal.com/images/smilies/wub.gif) ) because sometimes people around here do things that make me want to show how much I like their; photos, paintings, stories, humor etc.

This one would be beautiful in the collection, a nice little glomp.

It's from this site:

http://www.crooked-stroke.org/gallery/smilies/smilies.php

The author states:

Welcome to my smiley gallery. All smilies herein contained were created by me, using elements from Aiwan's GDK, Corel PSP X, Adobe Photoshop CS and Adobe ImageReady CS. None were taken from other sites or otherwise misappropriated. Feel free to browse and enjoy, and take what you like as long as you use them only for non-commercial purposes such as your blog, &c.

I make no profit of any form from the contents of this site, nor do I knowingly deprive others of their profit. No copyright infringement is intented or implied.

So, I guess it wouldn't be a problem to use it... There are a few other beautiful ones there... Like these:

And a redhead, too.

If the original blond was copyrighted, just ignore these.  If not, use 'em.

there is a mooning one and some that are fairly risque-- but some cute ones
and I do like the Spiderman one as well- dancing or whatever!

I don't know how to pull them out and repost them here for perusal -- amybe someone tech savvy will come along and help

it is just a Mustang (the car not the ranch in Nevada) site-- for women who own etc Mustang cars-- I wonder why your IP is banned--- stupid.

I prefer Sean Connery in his later years format-- he gets better the older he gets. Arnold is a beefcake in the truesense of the word--- hmmmm look for Arnold smilies( but he is a butt head deluxe)

Double-blerg.... I wondered about that, myself.   I had just assumed it was sorted by the arbitrary name/word each symbol is tagged with, with the arbitrary puncuation-marks being included, such as 'rolls-eyes' which is colon-colon-parenthesis (before iconization):

: : ) ==>  ::)

Since all characters also have an underlying numerical value, this is how all computer-driven sort engines operate on text.  Sure, there are exceptions written in to most, to allow the engine to "ignore" capitalization and such-- I've written them myself (the easiest fix for that, is to force-convert a temp copy into all the same case, then sort the temp-copy, then apply the sorted rules to the original).

But I suspect, if there is no way to sort the icons, that it's based on physical placement within the table itself, and that is likely re-ordered for pixel-space via the web page engine what generates the final images.

But that's just a guess...  one based on experience, but still a guess.

It's a damn shame these smilies cannot be put into some sort of hierarchy, or tree structure... id'd make finding'em easier..  say, with tags?  Such as:  a group of beer-related ones, a group of hugs, a group of ... well you get the idea.

:sigh:
Title: Re: Additions to the Smilies thread
Post by: Sibling Zono (anon1mat0) on July 16, 2011, 05:35:29 PM
Chances are that the sorting goes by the ID of the object, everytime you enter a row in a table with an identity/autonumber field, it is referenced by that number from then on. If the sorting is based on that all the smilies would have to be deleted and entered again in the desired order.

That actually makes perfect sense-- the index to the table is auto-generated, and no doubt is not subject to manual manipulation.

Now that you mention it, most do seem to present in order-added.  I seem to remember thinking that this was not the case, but for the most recent ones it apparently is.

So, if we had a static list, it might be possible to re-sort manually once, but new stuff would always show up at the bottom from there.

No it's not as simple as that. They get shunted about willy nilly.

example: (actually not an example, it happened) ----  I add bouncygirl1 bouncgirl2 bouncygirl3 bouncygirl4 which get ID  41, 42, 43 and 44. When added they appear in a row at the bottom of the display window, ie. last and in order. Then, at a later date, I add another smiley. NOTE smileys unchanged except for this new "add". Bouncygirl1 (41) gets moved to middle of row 9 in the smiley window, Bouncygirl2 gets moved to middle of row 2 in the window, bouncygirl3 gets moved near the end of row 11, etc. And it won't just be the previous four added. Others wll move as well. The only thing we can deduce from this is that it is the action of adding alters the sequence of (potentially) all smileys added before but leaves the newest (current add) as the last in the sequence.

(I'm almost always the one adding, and have been monitoring carefully).

If, instead of talking about rows in the window, we talk about rows in the "table" - never assume they are the same thing !!!!! - and therefore a "rowID" (knowledge of sequel maybe needed to understand this point) AND we imagine that a table row holds several smileys then we still have the same issue, random re-assigning, juggling, madness. OK, storing several per table row would be nuts (given we don't have any type of grouping at all), but has to be considered for thoroughness.

Some clue might be accrued from the way the smileys are listed in the "Add/Edit"" Smileys window - they are ordered by the filename the actual image is stored in. (I think this is reasonably mad but there we are). Hence the need to rename files before uploading - smiley file originals are often called eg umz1 - often obscure - so I rename them to what one might actually look for, meaningful filenames like "sportsgirl". Took me ages to delete/rename/re-upload files with meaningful names (delete and overwrite doesn't work) so that I could actually find smileys in the add/edit smiley list more easily and GET THEM INTO ORDER so, for example all fireworks smiley image filenames start with the letters FIRE "fire....." so they appear in order together in the list. But I did that a couple of years back, and now have the system working fine whenever I add a new one (or linked series) I know I have to first choose a filename.

As I said, there could be a clue there, BUT NOTE the order listed in the "add/edit" bears absolutely no relationship to the order you see in the smiley display window OR the filenames, OR the hidden "codes" or the "alt-name" of the smiley. So, there isn't a clue.

I have a feeling, without looking at the program code, which I am being too lazy to do, even though intrigued, that Bob is nearer the mark.

Quote from: Bob in a quantum-state-of-faith on July 16, 2011, 04:34:55 PM

But that's just a guess...  one based on experience, but still a guess.

Unsure about physical placement per se, (but may well be), but pixel-space seems very likely. The window always appears (initially in open) at a set size for me (is this true for everyone). See what happens when resizing the window.................. wider ......... smileys move up staying in order to fill the window nicely........ so more smileys per row,...... there is never a half a smiley displayed at the end of a row...........

NB I have experienced at least one system where smileys get half displayed due to sizing issues.

I may look at the program code, but Bob gets my money for now.  ;D

They've gone for visuals over order. Spacing smileys pre-ordered to varying window sizing is more difficult and slower.

Perhaps an adjustment to this one that's a wee bit more taddy?

I assumed it as ironic.

Looking back at this, I wondered if you realised it's a quote: Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind (1939 film, Clark Gable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gone_with_the_Wind_(film))) ?

About time we had some  new toys, so here they are:

Finally got round to animating one of Pieces' squidlings.  Only a basic animation, but if you guys like it, I'll do the other colours when I get a monemt.

Apologies for my mistake.

It's been so long since I promised to have a go at animating them, I forgot who I promised it to!

Also thank you for the compliment, I will be attempting the others as time allows.  Originally I had thought that the squidlings were all the same, just different colours, but upon further investigation I notice that their colouration is quite different in the way the shading is done.  Thus I will be doing each one separately, rather than just doing a colour replace type edit for each one.  More time consuming but I think the results will be better.  Also, I will animate each one slightly different, so they do not all move in sync as would have been the case.  As for the musical ones, I am still thinking about how to animate the music.  Do you think I should make the notes sort of float up and out of shot, or would it be better to have them sort of float about above the squidling?  I am leaning towards the latter option, but I am interested in other opinions.

I'd have to see the results. If they stood in line, a horizontal move would probably be best. But for a single singer I am not sure.

They should do the can-can. Floating notes upwards and off.

How about a mix of floating above and floating up and away? It could be indicative of some instruments raising you to the heavens, and others anchoring you firmly in your seat, or some such malarky.

Yup. that underlined phrase is the reason they look the way they do.  :)

Do I find it distasteful, yes. Do I think that it is in line with the "toadfish spirit", no.
Do I have a problem with violent animated symbols like this one  :axe:, no.

This http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zodiac_Killer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zodiac_Killer) is why I have a problem with this particular smiley.

I suppose too many nights watching too many crime documentaries on cable TV and a huge interest in symbols and how they are used is a rather rare combination. ::)
However in my former line of work I was suppose to know this sort of things in order to avoid making a fool of my self...

And thank you for removing the smilie. :)

There was even a (good) movie about the zodiac killer.

Darli, a little inquire, generally speaking any axe murder is considered a heinous crime, and the perpetrator is unambiguously a monster, so why in your opinion is the zodiac killer worse than others? We are generally speaking about very evil and psychopathic people even if it is tongue in cheek (same with eating babies), but not at all glorifying them, or at least that is never my intention when I mention their tasty flavor...
Title: Re: Additions to the Smilies thread
Post by: Darlica on November 24, 2012, 05:52:15 PM
All right.

It's not that I think that the Zodiac killer is worse than other (axe) murders. I would feel the same about a Manson family smiley, or a Ted Bundy one, or heck a 9/11 one with falling twin towers. It's about respect for the victims and their relatives.

Also, keeping in mind the toadfish mission statement and spirit of mutual respect and tolerance we so eagerly show off, I simply wondered if it really belongs here, because to me it doesn't.

When it comes to tongue in cheek, eating babies and all that, it is not about the degree of violence, It's about fiction and reality or between the general and the specific if you like.
For example :axe: is general and do work very well in a tongue in cheek context as do  :2guns: :smite: :bigsmack: :guillotine: :voodoo:. The  (http://toadfishmonastery.com/forum/Smileys/default/axe-murderer.gif) on the other hand is specific because of the symbol on his chest and is there by less adaptable in general situations (tongue in cheek ones for example).

I used to work with pictures and symbols, not to use "tainted" symbols sits in my spine. Symbols carries a lot of meaning, not to everybody but those who recognise it, and you never know who that might be.
A tainted symbol in a logotype can ruin a company's reputation for a long while. It can make people upset and sad even though you never meant to hurt anyone ("I just liked the look of it" is a rather common defence).
Quite recently a designer who more or less copied the Nazi SS skulls for her jewellery said that she didn't know that any one would recognise the look, and that they looked so "cool"... you can guess how that ended.

That said, personally I do enjoy a bit of ultra-violence know and then. I also laugh about inappropriate joke about women, men, sex and so on, but that doesn't mean I would like to add those things to the profile of this forum and whether we like it or not the smilies we use is a part of that profile.

I don't have a dog in this race, but would the smiley be OK if it was edited to remove the offending symbol?   Not that I approve of axe murderers, but in the same way we sometimes use the other over the top smileys to express frustration or other things in a tongue in cheek fashion, perhaps that might make it OK.  Just a thought. I can probably do it if desired.

Now let's be really picky. I like smilies to have the background transparent so the colour of the web page shows through. ie. I don't like

because it has a white background. Otherwise, yes, love it. Describes what my ME/CFS feels like.

Unfortunately I can't edit "animated" smilies as I don't have the software to do it. I could make the background transparent but the animation would be lost.

Yes, Blue, pleeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaase see what you can do. I really like the axe-man sans zodiac, and I don't think he is too big. Or point me at (free) s/w I could use.

We do have aa few smilies that are too big. IMO. But not these ones.
