There was much fuss made over it, but the repubs pushed it through anyway, under the guise of "remember 9-11" and other fear-mongering.

Oh dear. The 2004 act extended the possible time of imprisonment to 24 hours... the 2005 act changed it to 14 days, allowed ASIO (like the CIA) to interrogate prisoners, and also made it a crime to tell anyone about it after release.  :-X
