Seems the public response to most Congresspersons from their constituents is "DO NOT GIVE AWAY OUR MONEY" and "No, I don't care WHO crashes and burns, let' em."

Some Rep's staffers were reporting a 98-99% VOTE NO phone log.

They've known this was coming, the Repubs/Administration were just off on their timing, expecting it to land about next March...so it could be blamed on whoever gets the WH. Well, they screwed up hiding their screw up, and there's not a lot of sentiment for rushing another SKY IS FALLING "cure" for a problem that might no be that bad.

The story we're getting is that the credit markets are now almost totally frozen. In Europe if the ECB tries to push money into the banks to ease liquidity they put it straight bank in the ECB as the only safe place. Don't know what would happen if it gets worse here. Maybe the Bank of England would have to lend direct to blue chip companies to roll over commercial debt and stop them failing. Don't think the "lender of last resort" ever expected to be working at that level of granularity though. "So, Mr BP, why should we give you a loan..."

The gubmint is trying to fix its money printing problem by printing money.

I don't know why the Republicans are suddenly against printing money since they've been doing it most of the last eight years.

The government didn't do anything to help the credit markets before the Great Depression. It's kinda like now...

Sounds like the foreign press is telling it like it is and the "liberal" media is blaming the Democrats.

Personally I think the uber-rich are doing a kamikaze dive on the middle class.

Sibling Zono (anon1mat0)

How lovely would be to leave the banks to tank and create a state bank to do institutional lending, in fact why use the 700G$* just to buy toxic assets? Better buy all assets of the failing banks at bargain prices in 2 weeks after all of them go belly up**.
:devil2: :irony:

*Giga dollars ;)

**will the economy survive 2 weeks or a month of turmoil? Besides the idea not only is too socialist to be in anybody's book but it well may cost far more than 700G$...

Perhaps they know we're paying attention now and? As a rule, Republicans are supposed to be against doing that sort of thing, except in small, measured doses to allow the economy to grow. Or at least from what I recall.
$700 billion dollars is clearly NOT a small or actually measured dose (they just made the number up!).

They are only against it because the Democrats are in charge of Congress. If the Repubnikons were in charge it wouldn't be a problem.  They are just making political hay.

Actually I think it all makes political hay whichever way it is played. Cameron over here is making the sun shine by pushing the "this is no time for political differences...... we must all work together to save the country..."**** etc. ie. confrontation OR agreement is a load of straw.

**** that was yesterday's speech - I think today he was due to say the opposite....GB useless stuff.... but I haven't checked in yet.

Oh sure.  I just think the Repugnicans are very hypocritical which makes their hay stack a little bigger.

Scriblerus the Philosophe

I would like to torch that stack of hay. And I'd also like a pitchfork, but that's for chasing them away when they try to save the hay.

Don't rats flee from burning hay stacks rather than trying to save them?

Hey!  I've know quite a few rats in my day, and they are fine, fine animals....oh.

By "rats" you meant "politicians".

Never mind.

That was the "setting expectations" speech, as in "Don't expect us to fix this ******* mess in one term", only expressed in Old Etonian.

Steve Bell is a god amongst cartoonists.

It's great that Cameron's offering to work together with nearly new labour to mitigate the mess that his party started in Thatcher's time.
