Title: Monastery Hosting
Post by: ivor on December 03, 2008, 12:08:12 PM
Hi All,

Sometime soon, probably this weekend or sooner, the Monastery will go back up at DreamHost temporarily.  The Monastery will probably be a little flaky until the DNS settles down.  It will probably be a little slow too.  I expect the Monastery will be back up on the server in a month or so.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks,
MB

This is brilliant news. Re-experiencing Dreamhost will emphasise just how wonderful the MB hosting package is !!

~Pollyanna

The Hermitage has been kicked off its hosting server for a while now - no reason, just incompetence. They have been demanding proof of purchase (of the hosting package) and despite having sent it (goodness knows why they need it - it has two years still to run) they haven't responded by restoring service. I will bleat at them again. Just another item in the long list of modern life events that make me feel global meltdown is inevitable.

In other words, the Hermitage may be unavailable at present, which may discombobulate during this hiccup. Apologies.

Ah, thank you. I tried to look in there the other day. We may need it.

FYI: We also have the never-used emergency dinghy known as The Toadfish Monastery Satellite Site at Yahoo.com

You may wish to bookmark it in case we have technical difficulties in the coming days:

BTW MB how much traffic are we handling right now? I have a Win64 box plugged to a fat pipe, but by not being server SW I'm limited on the number of concurrent connections.

I'd have to check but it's a lot.  With all the search engines and all it's huge.

What Chatty said-- I know the server at work is in a closet down the hall- that's all I know on the subject.

However I do like the way sibling Zono talks about it.

Hi,

I am going to be putting the Monastery back on DreamHost today.  I'll be putting the Forum in maintenance mode soon.

Thanks,

For the past few days I've been having issues with the site, time outs, and general errors. I'm assuming I'm not the only one experiencing those, and that Dreamhost (nightmarehost?) is to blame.

Should we consider a different hosting company?

Dreamhost is only temporary isn't it? I was assuming MB  would be rehosting at some point.

I've been having some not connectings - but I thought it was my modem or something. When I reset the modem, the site comes back. Slightly odd in that it is ONLY Dreamhost that it affects, as I am able to access other sites when it happens, but I did think it was possible they were banning my IP for some reason. It always seems to coincide with copying files in windows explorer so I also thought Vistaaaaargh might be implicated but that is possibly a red herring. My laptop is misbehaving to such an extent I cannot tell what is what at all.

I'm having trouble finding a place to put my server so I thought I would try DreamHost Private Server.  I thought we were on it already but I guess not.  Our server at DreamHost is Pizarro and it is being a little flaky.

Is it possible to ask them to move the account to a different server?

And when you say 'a place to put my server' are talking about colocation? Because I know first hand how expensive that is.

I'm sure all DreamHost servers are as screwy as Pizarro.  I'm putting the Monastery on DreamHost Private Server so hopefully that will be better and it's not too expensive.

Yes, a co-lo.  I had the server at my house in Floriduh, but I don't live there any more.  There's no hope of getting FiOS in Oklahoma and the server is just too noisy for my Brother in Texas.  There's no way I could swing a real co-lo.

IS this something Dan and I could do? Provide space, I mean... I wouldn't know FiOS from fleas, but if "it" just needs a place to sit and be noisy, we HAVE that here.

Oh!  Thanks for the offer Chatty.

It needs a little air conditioning and there has to be FiOS available right there at your house.  The FiOS is paid for and I have a battery back up.  It will run up your electric bill a bit.  It's a great heater in the winter!

Well, we have the window units, and I don't tolerate heat well, so we keep it cool.

Hmmm, if we put it in the closet we could hang the tobacco above it to cure!! Or in the mini-house with Dan's ham radio stuff and that window unit. (Might have to rewire the mini-house to get enough power to it for everything, but Dan knows how.)

It has a 700 watt power supply so it should be okay with standard wiring.

Check here and see if FiOS is available in your area:

I've used shared Dreamhost servers before and I'll certainly stand by the comment they are screwy as hell.

A private server, while certainly more expensive, is much better.  Another forum I help admin runs on one, and if it were not for our (previously existing and unrelated database structural issues) it would be perfect.  Also, you can customize usage somewhat when you have it, which should keep costs at a more manageable level.

I think the people at DreamHost have an amazing setup.  I think it takes some amazing smarts to run so many servers with so few people.  Their Achilles heal is the fact that there's too many sites on their servers running who knows what.  All it takes is some screwy software or a hijacked site to take the server down.
Title: Re: Monastery Hosting
Post by: Kaliayev on March 30, 2009, 02:21:47 PM
Yeah.  When we were on a shared one, we had to turn the forum search function off, because if more than two people used it at once, we'd take down everyone on the cluster, including us.

And that got boring after a few days.

That may be a problem here... :D  My biggest problem though is spiders.  Especially the ones that ignore robots.txt. :(

I banned their IPs...but it seemed to have a tiny effect on bandwidth usage, at best  :(
