Title: Pirate Radio!
Post by: Sibling Qwertyuiopasd on November 07, 2010, 07:58:02 PM
No, not the movie, though it was a good one.

I'm revving up to do a Pirate themed show for my colleges radio (and it's on the internet, so you all can tune in), and wanted to post a thread in here to collect ideas on what to do for the show, besides playing music. Of course, if you have any suggestions for piratical music, this would be an appropriate place to discuss them, but I'm also interested in possibly doing things besides just playing music. Perhaps I could have fun facts about historical pirates, or feature a particular historical pirate every show and talk about them some, or give lessons on how to speak like a pirate proper. Any ideas or resources to help with these kinds of ideas would be awesome!

Thankee kindly!  :piratetoadfish:

pirate (n.)
mid-13c., from O.Fr. pirate, from L. pirata "sailor, sea robber," from Gk. peirates "brigand, pirate," lit. "one who attacks," from peiran "to attack, make a hostile attempt on, try," from peira "trial, an attempt, attack," from PIE base *per- "try" (cf. L. peritus "experienced," periculum "trial, experiment, risk, danger," see peril). Meaning "one who takes another's work without permission" first recorded 1701; sense of "unlicensed radio broadcaster" is from 1913. The verb is first recorded 1570s. Related: Pirated; pirating.

Can you squeeze anything out of that?  Or you might find a nugget here  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy) or here (http://www.nmm.ac.uk/explore/sea-and-ships/facts/ships-and-seafarers/pirates).

You need pirate call-ins. Seriously!

What about a pirate version of Tradio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tradio)?

Not sure the phones are working, but if they are, or when they do, I'll find a way to get people to call in. Do a pirate "most farfetched sea story" or something contest. long winded tales and all that, all in pirate voice. Whoever can improvise a story in a pirate voice for the longest wins. XD

I dunno about pirate Tradio... it's hard to just steal things over a phone line. ;)

You could also do pre-recorded 'calls' from one of the blaggards 'round here or TOP.  Doesn't have to be the real deal, just sound like it.  Skype someone and record it.

I was thinking about some of the buy and sell ads you see around Portsmouth for the Tradio thing - again, doesn't all need to be live to air, you can read out 'letters' sent in by your listeners.

I'd not be afraid of making it a bit of a theatrical exercise (well, I'd be afraid, but presumably you wouldn't) and do the broadcast from a fictional pirate town, with news, weather forecasts, local happenings and the lot.  Might take a bit of work to assemble each week, but it'd be a blast to listen to and more fun than having to read an essay about a historical pirate every week.

Ack! I meant to update you guys much sooner, but every time I remembered I wasn't actually at my computer, so here we are.

I will officially be broadcasting my first Pirate show at 6pm EST, this Friday, the 19th! the link is, again, www.wcnulive.com

Just click "listen live" and then stream through iTunes, media player, shoutcast, or anything like that!

This will be in about an hour and 15 minutes from now. Dang, I have a rehearsal!

Yeah, some of my friends at VTech are going to be busy in cars or buses on their way home for Thanksgiving break. Why don't they have to go to class on Monday and Tuesday like me? :P

I wonder if earlier in the day would be better for most people? It has to be Friday, and I certainly wouldn't want to do it later than 6, but I might be able to get an earlier time slot next semester.

Actually, I think 6 is a good time slot. A lot of people could listen during dinner.

Happy 100th warm and fuzzy hug!

Earlier is probably no better, as people will be in class or the pub. ;)

I will try to catch it today, if I'm at home or still sitting at my desk (hopefully the former, possibly the pub ;)).

Listenin!

Oh yes, I'm doing it in pirate persona, obviously. XD Unfortunately I don't yet have that song, but it's on my list. Plus, I'm playing off a already set playlist, which doesn't really lend itself to plugging in requests. I might leave some time at the end of a future playlist as room to add requests.

Yarr!

Oh, another one for a future (comedy) show - it's not piratical but it is Caribbean and about a boat:

Mighty Sparrow - Wife and Boat

And for the Canadians, a proper privateering song: Stan Rogers - Barrett's Privateers
God damn them all, I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold

Oh, don't forget "Friggin' in the Rigging" by the Sex Pistols - not sure you can play this one on the radio, though. ;)

I do have a version of that song by Lourdon Wainwright III, actually. But yes, I think I shall refrain.

I've got the playlist figured out for this weeks show. More along the lines of traditional pirate songs or sea shanty's or just sort of Irish stuff, but still maintaining a rock influence. Punk versions of Drunken Sailor and all that. ;)

Make sure you tune in! 6pm this Friday, only lasts an hour! Here's the link, so's you don't have to go to the earlier page.

Holy bump, batman!

So, WCNU has gotten itself figured out for the new semester, and my Pirate Show is back on the schedule, same timeslot. 6PM EST, 11PM GMT, 10am somewhere in Australia (I think I looked up Canberra to get that time).

Since I'm 're-introducing' the show, it'll be another jack of all trades show, based off the old playlist, but with some changes. After that, I'll do more specific ones.

Arrr!

Had some reports that the most recent link did not work - and just confirmed that myself.

Any tips?

Derp, not only is that link a typo, but it's not even the right link. Here is the proper link:

Thanks for catching that!

I can't get it to work with Windows Media Player like the page says, but that's me being dense I think.   Any tips?

Not sure. I can't seem to get WMP to recognize it either. Have you tried the Shoutcast.com link?
