Serious Piratin' / Pirate Radio!
November 07, 2010, 07:58:02 PM
No, not the movie, though it was a good one.

I'm revving up to do a Pirate themed show for my colleges radio (and it's on the internet, so you all can tune in), and wanted to post a thread in here to collect ideas on what to do for the show, besides playing music. Of course, if you have any suggestions for piratical music, this would be an appropriate place to discuss them, but I'm also interested in possibly doing things besides just playing music. Perhaps I could have fun facts about historical pirates, or feature a particular historical pirate every show and talk about them some, or give lessons on how to speak like a pirate proper. Any ideas or resources to help with these kinds of ideas would be awesome!

Thankee kindly!  :piratetoadfish:

Serious Piratin' / I am a Pirate! Essay
January 08, 2010, 09:04:14 PM
Essay of the college variety. Here's my 300 word personal essay.

I am a pirate. I don't commit crimes on the high seas, or pillage cities, or even spend much time on boats.
I identify as a pirate though, and express that identity every Friday at school dressed entirely as a pirate.
My piracy has stemmed from two main inspirations, but has come to symbolize many facets of my life.

In 8th grade, I was introduced and quite taken by the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a satirist movement based on the opposition of teaching Intelligent Design in public schools.
There is a sort of mock religion involved, which includes the tenets that pirates are the FSM's most favored creation (as evidenced by global temperatures rising as pirates populations have thinned), and Fridays being the holiest day of the week.
Naturally, I dress in full pirate regalia to express my allegiance to the ideals of religious freedom and plurality.

I also sympathize with the Pirate Party, an international political party originating in Sweden that is dissatisfied with the current patent and copyright system, and advocates for personal privacy, especially in terms of the internet and technology.

As my friends and I began to dress as pirate, we also became interested in the steampunk fad, which advocates doing the impossible for the sake of doing the impossible (while dressing in Victorian science fiction style).
I do not, however, support or condone the actions of modern pirates, such as the ones from Somalia.

My take on piracy is that of a free, audacious lifestyle adhering to ideals I stated above.
I will always fight dirty of something I believe in.
I will always wear a giant black tri-corner hat and ask why you aren't.
I will always do what I want 'cause a pirate is free.
I couldn't exist any other way.

Any constructive criticism is of course entirely welcome, but I'm mostly posting it here just to share. What do you think? Do you agree with the lifestyle outlined?

got this in a not exactly mass email, but an email from one of my good friends to multiple friends of his, including me.

http://richprosperity.com/2008/11/23/share-this-with-anyone-that-needs-to-smile-today/

had some trouble embedding it... so if someone can help with that.

Video's a bit on the long side, clocking in at 16 minutes, 23 seconds, but it's quite worth it. Good acting/editing to boot, too!

Human Concerns / Love Through Action
May 18, 2008, 08:33:01 PM
Hey, so, I've definitely been here sometime in the past... 3 months? right. Well, if you'll forgive another one of my oh so charictaristic absences, I have something I'd really like to share with you all.

My blog post about Love Through Action

or you can skip right to the source at Love Through Action (dot) blogspot (dot) com

I'm in a bit of a rush right now, but all the information is at those two links. The creator of it is studying to be a Unitarian Universalist minister, which is (one of) mine and Ops' religion, so that's cool :D

I'll be posting more, I hope, but I can only promise I will in this particular thread.

Normally these phisers are pretending to be obscenely rich farmers, exiled princes, or something else euqally ingerian. however, a few have started saying they're from the Cote D'ivoire, but this one just made me want to respond...

Quote from: sisanabelisaac28@hotmail.frDearest In Christ

I am Sister Anabel Isaac from Bahrain. I am married to Dr. Herbert Isaac  who worked with Bahrain embassy in cote d'ivoire for nine years before he died in the year 2000.We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days.

Before his death we were both born again Christians. Since his death I decided not to re-marry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against. When my late husband was alive hedeposited the sum of (7.5Million U.S. Dollars)with one of the Security Company here  in Cote D Ivorie.Presently, this money is still with the security company. Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next three months due to cancer problem.Though what disturbs me most is my stroke Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to church or better still a christian individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct here in.

I want a church that will use this to fund churches, orphanages and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that Blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want my husband's hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner. Hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bossom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace.

I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my healthbecause of the presence of my husband's relatives around me always. I don't want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible. As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the Security company in ivory coast.I will also issue you a letter of authority that will empower you as the original- beneficiary of this fund. I want you and the church to always pray for me because the lord is my shephard. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian.

Who ever that wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life. any delay in your reply will give me room in searching for a church or christian individual for this same purpose.
Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I stated herein.

Hoping to hearing from you.
Remain blessed in the name of the Lord.
Yours in Christ.
Sister Anabel Isaac

in addition to wanting you guys to see this, I was wondering if you guys could suggest any funny (and safe) responses. I know it'll probably peg me as a "live one" but that doesn't bother me, as long as my response is good enough. :P I can just tag future stuff as spam and Gmail will do the rest.

so, your suggestions please!

Games and Jokes / Lion Proverbs
August 26, 2007, 07:08:32 PM
I was originally inspired by this comic by J. Jacques: http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=792

I've sort of expanded to proverbs, and other famous sayings, and you'll see what I mean. anyway, I'll start with the ones I've collected, and the ones in that comic. I'll update this list every time we hit a new page or so.

also, I've bolded the ones I think are best.

"You play with the lion and you're gonna get burned."
"The grass is always greener on the other side of the lion"
"A lion saved is a lion earned"
"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw lions"
"A lion in the hand is worth two in the bush"
"Speak softy but carry a big lion"
"The enemy of my enemy is my lion"
"measure twice, lion once"
"Reports of my lion have been greatly exaggerated"
"I would do anything for lion, but I won't do that"
"Don't look a gift-lion in the mouth"
"To kill two birds with one lion"
"the journey of a thousand miles beings with a single lion"
"do unto lions as you would have lions do unto you"
"Lions should not be afraid of their government, governments should be afraid of their lions"
"Slow and steady wins the lion"
"Lions speak louder than words"
"Beggars can't be lions"
"Birds of a lion flock together"
"Curiosity killed the lion"
"Fight fire with lions"
"Life is like a box of lions"
"Don't judge a man untill you have walked two moons in his lion."

I would greatlye appreciate it. didn't know where to put this or who to pm, so here this is:

err... here it was, or this is it?

whatever.
