Miscellaneous Discussion / Re: Higher Education
March 10, 2014, 11:34:12 PM
In terms of being good at a variety of things... even though she will likely have to choose one thing (even if it's a broad area like "English" or what have you), that absolutely doesn't mean one has to stop doing or focus less on other things.

Seems obvious, but just from my own reflection, I was doing a fair bit of Piano and music theory work in High School, and spend the first part of my college search looking at music programs, though I ultimately decided I didn't want to lock myself in a room for 4 years doing nothing but practicing (an exagerration, but still). But, I didn't take any sort of piano (even though I had/have a few small electronic ones) to my dorm room, though I didn't need to because the school had ones that were available for the music students, and all students as long as they aren't reserved by music students at the time. I did take advantage of that a few times, but I mostly got way out of practice. Again, not the worst thing in the world, and I still pick the piano up (as it were) now and again. But it's hardly consistent and I definitely would have more skill with it today if I was more consistent even though I've been studying philosophy and engaging in other pursuits.

So, tl;dr version: Might not hurt to put a little intentional effort into keeping up with interests, hobbies, skills, etc. that aren't your "main" focus, as it were, or that once were but are no longer.

As long as one can budget time for it all, one can do all the things one wants to, even if only one of them is your "major" or eventually your "job."

Or is this just wishful thinking on my part?  :P

Was it really a commentary on the fur itself, or the lemmings economic systems?

Music / Re: 5 most played albums?

Five is a state of mind, man. Break free from the numerological constraints of society.

I just didn't feel quite right putting up 4 Ray Lynch albums and then one other, so I went for top 5 artists instead... :P And after that, well, all bets are off.

Actually, Roy's post seemed more in the realm of epistemology than anything.

Let's see... not sure on iTunes how to show most plays out of recent times, so if that's what you're using Darlica let me know how because that sounds cool.

Just straight play-count skews results because I listen to music when I sleep and usually certain playlists, so my all-time ends up looking like this:

1. Four Ray Lynch CDs (Deep Breakfast, The Sky of Mind, Nothing Above My Shoulders But The Evening, No Blue Thing)
2. Moby (18)
3. Enya (Watermark)
4. Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here)
5. Nine Inch Nails (Ghosts I-IV)

But some artists/albums I've been into more generally recently:

Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks
The Heavy - The Glorious Dead, Great Vengeance And Furious Fire, The House that Dirt Built, all really awesome albums.
Cage the Elephant - Melophobia
Young The Giant - Mind Over Matter
Soulsavers - The Light the Dead See

S'cold. And if I'm not mistaken (which I probably am), isn't there another winter storm system a few days ahead? While the lady and I head up to New York? Might need to buy some better socks...

I am similarly at a little loss of words, though perhaps somewhat more for the regret around not spending more time around these parts and like and getting to know her and, really, all of you better.

Not about me, though. Just mean to say there's not much more I could say except to echo what has been said of her.

Makes me think of what I could've said, or would say to her (and others). But I think they she knew, and knows.

What are you ...ing? / Re: What are you reading?
February 15, 2013, 01:34:03 AM
Recently finished Charles Shiro Inouye's Evanescence and Form. Very good, thorough, yet accessible introduction to Japanese culture, actually read for a philosophy course. References a lot of things, sometimes without explanation apparently... I only noticed when he started quickly making comparison between Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Otomo's Akira, mentioning Akira and characters from it with no explanation of preparation. I only caught it 'cause I've seen the film so I understood what he was talking about. Anyway... good read. Currently delving into much older Japanese mythology, though I know a fair bit of it already...
