Just out of curiosity, how many times have the French been mocked, insulted and worse on faux or even in other more 'respectable' networks? Have the French asked for an apology?

I watched the second video first - after I saw the first I figured Peter Mackay took it a little too seriously.  OTOH, someone needs to at least make an attempt to rein in the idjits on occasion.

Canadians in general feel slighted by this sort of thing because increasingly we are feeling that Afghanistan is America's War.  You want our help, then keep a civil tongue.

There is much reference to the 4 soldiers recently killed in Afghanistan in the second clip - this is because we still keep track of military deaths on an individual, not statistical, basis (fortunately, our casualties have been low enough to do so).

It wasn't my intention to criticize the post, but the tone of the second video, had I been the minister of defense I would've downplayed the comments and dismissed the network altogether as a bunch ill informed/willed yahoos.

I suppose if I was the minister of defense, I'd be a little defensive.

Seriously, though...  it's a Canadian mindset, and part of the reason we are considered to be so polite.  We would, to some degree, feel embarrassed and (very likely) apologize if a fellow Canadian pulled this towards another country on a major news network, even if we had nothing to do with it and didn't remotely endorse the opinion.  We don't take kindly to our compatriots making us look like assholes to the world, eh?  So we perceive that anything said (apparently) unchallenged on TV down there carries an implied endorsement.

In Canada, the comments sparked outrage from coast to coast. Benson was scheduled to appear in Canada at Edmonton's The Comic Strip April 3-5, 2009, but the shows were cancelled after the owner received threats of "bodily injury" toward the American comic. "Some were saying he wouldn't make it from the airport to the club. For everyone's safety, we decided it was best to avoid the scenario altogether," manager Rick Bronson said.

There's a little bit of a defensive attitude due to how badly the US media dwarfs the Canadian media, even in our own country.  Fox News is broadcast via cable all over Canada, so this would have been beamed live to plenty of Canadian households.  I'll wager that if something similar occured on say, The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos there'd be barely a blip down there.  This was front-page news in Canada, even though some our American Siblings haven't heard of the show.

I was a bit bemused by the high-level political response once I'd seen the clip that provoked it.  I was expecting something much more serious.


Oh, and for the record....

The Fox News television host who mocked Canadian troops in Afghanistan has apologized for what he says was a satire.

"The March 17th episode of Red Eye included a segment discussing Canada's plan for a 'synchronized break,' which was in no way an attempt to make light of troop efforts," Greg Gutfeld, host of the segment, told the Canwest News Service on Monday in an e-mailed statement.

"However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize. Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humourous and ridiculous manner."

I know history, facts and other sundry topics are not Fox's forte...but have they ever heard of two little skirmishes called Paschendale and Vimy Ridge?  They were just two tiny, insignificant little battles in some minor border clash called WWI.  One is referred to as "the blackest day in the history of the German Army" (in reference to the Australian and Canadian troops who stomped 6 seperate German divisions) and killed so many at Vimy Ridge even the Germans didn't bother to count the bodies.

Besides, how many Fox anchors have fought in a war anyway?  Not including the paid Pentagon propagandists pretending to be independent analysts, and Oliver North aside?

What I'd like to do with FOX's cast is see if we non-idjit Americans can borrow some of the backwoods of Qubec and drop them there, sans everything but an ax and some basic provisions. France's bastard children + Idjit Americans + backwoods = interesting times.

Or, better yet because no permission is needed, drop all the men in Afghanistan and see if the prawn industry will take the women back.

I'm guessing the war would have gone swell...and then there would have been absolutely no money in the pot for the Marshall Plan, so Europe falls to Communism on the cheap.

Then it all gets sorta like Red Dawn, only 40 years earlier.
