TODAY !!! at 8.30pm, the WWF is hoping a billion people around the world will turn off their lights for an hour – WWF's Earth Hour.

I am a bit surprised we are not being encouraged to turn off more than lights. Maybe it is a trial run ;)

Also I haven't seen this advertised so maybe they are simply "hoping"

Wow!  The World Wrestling Federation went so green!

I'm a bit skeptical about the whole thing. Yes, it may raise awareness about our power consumption, etc, but I'm more inclined to make more meaningful and lasting (like driving a fuel efficient car and avoid driving when possible, use power efficient appliances, use low wattage lighting, etc).

I wonder how many people will turn off their lights and just watch a power hungry plasma TV in the meantime.

If they say turn off the master switch for one hour, then we may be doing something.

What resources do candles use up?

I am beginning to think the only thing that will save us is the elimination of the human species.

Just lights? I thought I read somewhere that it was lights and appliances. I was planning simply to turn off the main electricity switch - since we have power cuts about once a week I'm getting quite used to resetting the few clocks that need it! Of course, I do understand that there are some who have many and complicated clocks to reset if they lose/switch off power to everything. Here they are promising to turn off the lights on at least one of the bridges across the Duna (that's the Danube for those who don't know).

Looking forward to my candlelit meditation - oops only 10 minutes to go.

There's a website (of course) which you may already have discovered: http://www.earthhour.org/home/

Well, the lights were off at 8:30 last night. Actually from around 4:10 to 11:30.

And we were under the light of candles.

And we weren't home  :D

(my cousin's wedding was nice, although I still can't wrap my mind around he being married or any sane woman wanting to marry him  ;) )

I was well aware of it, last year and the year before that I shut down all electric appliances in my home except a clock and the freezer/fridge.
The way I see it it isn't about energy saving just that hour, it's a gesture to show awareness, and I am aware, I don't leave the TV or computer on standby I turn of the light when I leave a room, turn down the heat when I'm not home for to days or more (no AC needed around here) et al.

However this year I skipped it. This year I didn't spend this day in a city or other well populated area, I was on the countryside at my mothers place, where no one who would see my gesture save form a satellite or two so I left my desk lamp on and continued painting eggshells for Easter...(believe me to turn of all electric appliances here which would include water pump and heating while it's still winter out side would just cause a mess).

I'm a bit peeved though that the Stockholm city counsel decided to not take part in the manifestation and left the lights on that lights up the city hall, some great bridges and other monuments in the city.

And it's nice to see you again Jazzica! :D

Very nice candlelit meditation (Where's the smiley for "smug grin"?). Today I was looking for pictures of Budapest with its lights out (found one!) and found that the majority of pictures supposedly depicting "Earth Hour" show monuments "moments before plunging into darkness". The ones that are supposedly in darkness are mostly notable for the number of lights you can still see burning. Of course, it's a bit silly looking for pictures of things in the dark, now I come to think of it.

[Thank you Darlica for your welcome]

Pictures of dark with candles can be wonderful. But probably not sensible to search for black socks.

Except possibly around the candles  :)

Hey there jazzcica.

I was asleep so everything was off except the clocks-radio. I agree flipping the main switch is the idea and the thing to do.
As I understand it the idea is to get everyone thinking about power consumption-and way to further save resources on a daily basis.

Good idea---
