Davey Jones's Locker / Labor Party leader election
December 02, 2006, 11:00:08 AM
I still can't decide whether I'm pleased or not... our labor party (left-wing) is having an election next week as to their leader...

I can't decide whether to back the old hand who's experienced but not really doing a wonderful job, or the two new-uns who will no doubt change things but quite possibly stuff other things up along the way...

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/ill-win-says-beazley--and-rudd/2006/12/02/1164777833619.html

Ah well, it will be interesting if nothing else. And I can't deny that the labor party needs some kind of change, whoever initiates it... ::)

Good on them! What a pity that it had to be the one middle-eastern country that the others won't follow... ;)

If I was explaining the first and third to a young child, I would do it like this - assuming that they knew that the earth, sun, and moon are all round.

If the sun was a beach ball, the earth would only be a marble - that's how big the sun is. It looks smaller because it's further away, like a tree in the distance looks really little.

If the earth is a marble, then the moon is like a tiny bead, or a teeny ball of blue-tack (whichever is handier).

The earth, the marble, goes around the sun. It takes one year for the sun to go all the way round.

The moon, the bead/blue-tack, goes around the earth. It takes about a month for the moon to go all the way around.

All the time, the earth is spinning. Each time it spins is one day and one night. The day is when we're facing towards the sun, so the light can shine on it, and the night is when we're on the other side, so the rest of the earth blocks the light.

You can see that the moon is always closer than the sun.

Demonstration is the best way, in my opinion. ;D

Useless Speculation / Re: 3 Wishes
November 14, 2006, 07:40:09 AM
1. DeeDee's 'enough' one

2. Having a purse I could pull anything out of (money, a drink, a friend, an elephant)

3. Not for me or anyone to live forever, but for our deaths to be as swift and painless (for both ourselves and our family/friends) as possible.

That last is after watching one grandmother die of dementia and another gradually go downhill with it, but as yet is still alive.

^Vita, that's my mother's birthday! And indeed, us Pisces are clearly destined for a siblinghood such as this.

Looks like they walk on their hands flat, like feet. I too would be interested to find out if they were mentally handicapped.

Well, here I was getting all [sarcasm]excited[/sarcasm] because a radio report I heard was saying that the Dems will probably let him through to show their 'bipartisan' *cough* spirit.

Please, let it not be so.

Excellent article. I agree that Bushya's idea of making the war 'smarter' is to my mind like saying that global warming isn't a problem because we have air conditioning.

QuoteIn his book, Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib, Seymour Hersh described the "unacknowledged" special-access program (SAP) established by a top-secret order Bush signed in late 2001 or early 2002. It authorized the Defense Department to set up a clandestine team of Special Forces operatives to defy international law and snatch, or assassinate, anyone considered a "high-value" Al Qaeda operative, anywhere in the world."
I would like to see Bush in a similar case to Rummy, myself.

Politics / Re: Bills to go through the new Congress....
November 12, 2006, 09:19:17 PM
Quote from: VitaGeez, I could go on forever.  I'll stop here; maybe I should be posting this in The Three Wishes  Thread! :D

Yeah, I was going to put this in 'Useless Speculation' but I thought it might be tempting fate. :P

I agree minimum wage should be raised. I also think that some basic healthcare should be free. Here in Australia ANYONE (well, excluding refugees, but I won't go into that... ::) ) can go to the doctor, within reasonable limits, and feel that they don't need to worry about budget. I know it's a major thing to set up, but in my opinion it's one of the most important things.

After getting rid of a UN representative who doesn't like the idea of the organization he works in, of course....

Politics / Bills to go through the new Congress....

So, now that we have a (just) Democratic congress ;D, what would you like to pass, what do you think will pass, what do you hope doesn't?

Me? I just want them to get the hell rid of John Bolton.   ::) :smite:
