A noun, four syllables, and rather sinful (sic).
A multi-disciplinary word, though should be tackled in short order by the physics minds here (is used in multiple areas of physical science). 
A multi-faceted approach would be the best way for a layperson to lay hands on it.

Does anyone read auras?  They may be familliar with the term.

In some applications it may shed new light on a process, but in others it only modifies one's outlook.
