OK, not Montgolfiere...it was Lallement that itvented the bicycle. (Not Baron von Drais, his didn't have pedals and all...) John Kemp Starley invented the 'modern' bicycle, the safety bicycle with the similar size wheels, rather than the high wheeled ones.

Arrrgh...can we get a little less esoteric with the clues? This is one of the reasons people hate LPWB...it excludes the bilingual way too often, the esoterica is not always understandable even when explained, and there's no way to follow some clues. For instance, the 1841 needle...are we talking weaponry (Johann Nicholas von Dreyse and the Prussians), magnetism (Daniel Davis), Thoreaus journals, Emerson's Essays on Compensation and Polarity?  Or Zophar Jayne, M.D. and his 1841 hypodermic syringe? Sewing needles?? Would that be Thimmoniere or Newton and Archbold?? Both made "needle news" in 1841. Wheatstone's single needle telegraph was introduced in 1841 as well.

You see the dilemma.

You are on the right way. Drais was the first to build a bi-cycle with the wheels behind each other (as compared to a cart or ricsaw). Yes, Dreyse is your needle guy.
Later in life he proposed a modernized version (and built a few) of the LPWB.
Now try to get the name of that taking altenatively
a) the French lady enjoying herself
b) a standard statement by the queen (usually negative)
c) the absence of a certain dance or musical instrument

I've never understood the Last Post...I am a simple Pirate and my favourite invention was the 'Gray's safety Hook' which resembled a very large safety pin.  Though very functional it never caught on because the owner looked a complete buffoon! Last Post.

The clues at the bottom of the last page from Quasi and myself are fairly direct leads to the central part of the word for those who like that type of crossword clue. This part is syllable two of three, although the first syllable is an obvious one to add to the second syllable if you get the second syllable. If you go this route, Swato's clues would then lead you to completing the actual word.

The king in the source for Rigoletto does what the queen stereotypically is not. Now get the spelling right and fire away.

I'm coming to the conclusion that current fashion (not just good Swatopluk's) in LPWB clues is to make statements that are clearly true about the word, but that give no actual clue to the poor player...  ::)
It's making the game very frustrating...

Here's a Clue.
