The clues so far:

- it's a place
- part of something that used to be three, now it's two (but the LPWB word itself used to be two, and is now one)
- when the three things became two things, it was by two of the things combining together
- the three things became two things through a physical process, not a political one; this happened between AD 1000 and 2000
- it's a real place, but it is very close to the mouth of Hell (specifically, the Mouth of Hell actually lies between the LPWB word and a Saint)
- smaller than Texas
- they use the Euro there, but it's not in Europe
- Aggie probably has an advantage over the rest of you at guessing this, but it's not in Canada
- it was attacked by the British during the American Revolution, but is not, and has never been, part of the United States
- it was controlled by the Axis forces for part (but not all) of World War II
- it IS a place - an actual place.  You can find it in any world atlas, and people still live there.
- it's not between Canada and Greenland
- the LPWB word is also a common first name for a person, but in an uncommon European language
- if you swim straight north from the LPWB word, when you hit land they may make you kiss a fish

More clues!

- the three things became two things in the 18th century
- the only public execution by guillotine to ever occur in North America did not happen in the LPWB word, but was very close nearby

(and in case the "guillotine" clue didn't point you in the right direction...)

- when the LPWB was controlled by the Axis powers in WWII, it was under control of Vichy France.

Oh, and here I was off in the West Indies... couldn't suss out the WWII clue and there's too many Saints thataway.

Looks like it's easy to sail to your Fortune from there, these days.

One more clue:

- According to the musical group Great Big Sea, there isn't that much ocean in the area where the LPWB word is

Last to Google, then to the atlases! Post

Swatopluk

Sounds like one of the French departements in the Caribbean or parts of Fench Guayana (they had a Devil's Island there, Dreyfuss was imprisoned there for example.)

No time, therefore Last Post
Knurrhähne sind eßbar aber empfehlen würde ich das nicht unbedingt.
The aspitriglos is edible though I do not actually recommend it.

Hmm...

One more clue:

- the fish in question that one might make you kiss is not a toadfish, but is in fact a cod

BTW - if you figure out the last clue I gave about the Great Big Sea reference, it'll really narrow down the geography.

Last Google, Google, Google... then perhaps a (gasp!) paper atlas Post

Edit - one more clue: the "uncommon European language" I mentioned previously is Basque.  This probably won't help you too much by itself, but may help weed out some ideas that were heading in the wrong direction.

Edit 2 -

It was easier to sail your fortune from the LPWB word during Prohibition.  At one point, Al Capone was fond of the area.
;D

anthrobabe

so obviously I have missed something new here.
see what happens when a sibling takes a short sabatical

Was there a bi-weekly ferry in Capone's day? ;D

More "smuggling" than a "ferry" (though there may have been a ferry as well - I'm not sure).   ;D

OOOps!  Portugal is not in South America, then? <heh> Geography, except for the really, really big countries, is not my strongest suit.  (either that, or my memory is failing AGAIN.  But I forget which it is ... Hmmm.)

I think I keep confusing all those nice people who speak Portuguese who live in South America with the origin-country of the language ... *sigh*

As for the LPW, hmmm.  Rock of Gibraltar?  No? rats ...

Meditranean Sea? It was a plain, not all that long ago, geologically-speaking.

How about the Black Sea? There's a really cool book about how the filling up of this could have inspired all those legends of Noah and the like.  It would have taken a very long time in human terms, but an eye-blink geologically. Say a hundred years or so.  I have a book about it, Noah's Flood: The New Scientific Discoveries About The Event That Changed History

*sigh* Last post, anyway.
Sometimes, the real journey can only be taken by making a mistake.

my webpage-- alas, Cox deleted it--dead link... oh well ::)

Recapping one clue (and hopefully pointing BiaQSoF toward the right continent):

- the only public execution by guillotine to ever occur in North America did not happen in the LPWB word, but was very close nearby

In this case, "very close nearby" is a few miles.  You can take it as given that the LPWB is in North America.

Last where in North America do they use the Euro? Post

Aggie

Not in Canada?  Quebec, eh?

Last "close but no San Miguel" Post  ;D
WWDDD?

Sibling Lambicus the Toluous

Nope, not Canada.  Not Quebec either.   :)

- it IS a place - an actual place.  You can find it in any world atlas, and people still live there.
- it's not between Canada and Greenland
- the LPWB word is also a common first name for a person, but in an uncommon European language (Basque)
- if you swim straight north from the LPWB word, when you hit land they may make you kiss a fish (a cod, in fact!)
- the three things became two things in the 18th century
- the only public execution by guillotine to ever occur in North America did not happen in the LPWB word, but was very close nearby (i.e. a few miles away)

Another couple of clues (well, clues to clues more than clues to the LPWB word):

- kissing a cod is part of a ritual called "getting screeched in" that is popular with the tourists in a certain area, i.e. the place where you would hit land if you swam due north from the LPWB word (if you didn't get hypothermia in the process - it's not that far, but it's cold water)
- "the Mouth of Hell" was given its name by sailors and fishermen
- the Saint on the other side of the Mouth of Hell from the LPWB word was the one on which the church was built, according to the Bible (though in this case, his name is not in English)

Last I've probably given it away now Post
