I picture Swato wearing those geeky but sexy eye-glasses, wearing a gleaming lab coat, holding the beaker of all knowledge in one hand (it has tea in it actually!) and a scroll in the other(it's a disertation!). The sacred squidling perched on his shoulder.

Black Bart is our 'saint' of witty writing- he is perched at his desk quill and ink well at hand(ok tankard of rum too). He wears the coat of office- complete with Toadfish coat of arms breast plate.

Goat is our stalwart and brave Knight upon a bridge. He wears the steel-toed boots of troll kicking and carries the banner of comradship. Attached to the banner staff are the multi-colored locks of various vanquished trolls and sundry characters.

Not very effectively if the guarding is mythical, or indeed the gates.

Griffin's are benign so the guarding would involve addressing the issues of why anyone wanted to enter through the gates. I am compiling case notes; I have got as far as what do the gates mean to you?
