Honesty, and a willingness to listen to the thoughts, ramblings and even misconceptions with an open mind.

My foster son told me that the ability to talk honesty, without euphemisms, shame or even embarrassment at his ignorance is probably the only reason that he, among all his bio-siblings, doesn't have at least 3 kids, generally with differing other parents.

What I remember telling him was "Sex happens, sometimes when you don't expect it. Be ready for the unexpected, don't ANTICIPATE anything, but have what you need close at hand." That, and "Never be afraid to ask questions. We won't judge you, we just want you to be both safe and sane."

I think that was about the time I got interested in Homer&Co too, although I stuck to the very detailed retellings by Gustav Schwab (Sagen des Klassischen Altertums, Tales from Classic Antiquity). He downplayed the sex parts a bit (normal for the time) but otherwise everything is there down to the details. This very thick book also contained all the other epic stories (7 against Thebes, Herakles, the Argonauts...) plus a lot of "minor" (i.e. shorter) tales. I think it is the best collection of its kind that there is (I think nobody even tried to rival it).
The original epics came a bit later.

Oh and Zono-- in a hilarious side note-- remember to use proper words for parts and stuff- my daughter (age 17) has a friend (also 17) that uses the silliest words because that is what she was taught and I have to #1 bite my tongue and #2 attempt to not laugh my butt off. The first time I heard her say tally-whacker in my backseat while I was driving I almost died!  I'm sure you don't have this issue- keep it that way-
