The US national anthem is an old English drinking song.

The melody is a chore to sing, the range is painful, and it DOES sound better  if the performer is drunk rather than soberly straining to deal with that ponderous melody.

But, it's nice that the words are so flexible, especially concerning the ability of Hispanic males to visualize things...

OH, let's DO tell the Fundies!!

I HATED singing that thing... One of the last times I sang it at the beginning of a stupid basketball game (I used to be on the rotation of singers who sang it at the beginning of Houston Rockets games), they used the higher key recording (B flat instead of A flat, I think) and I dang near burst a blood vessel and a vocal chord on national TV. They NEVER showed the anthem being sung on TV, but they did that night. Just to make me look stupid, I think.

I grew up hating my national anthem (in fact I dislike most of them and the über-nationalism that usually goes with them). Now I don't feel it is bad (I like the Spaniard and the French ones) but I'm not crazy about it.

The French is the quintessential revolutionary anthem (with a horrible but at least honest text). the British/old German/Liechtenstein/etc. anthem plays the same part for the traditional.
Few modern states took the effort to get something similarly timeless.
In my opinion South American anthems are most pleasing to the ear on average (though the tunes are not the most memorable ones). Jose at the optician sounds more like the Middle East standard: brass without brains .
