Maybe it's a Freudian slip, as the usual NA acronym is ASA, I think. ;)

Hauling over some chatter from the Drinking thread:

Usually I don't know them by the original title but by the international one e.g. Once Upon a Time in a Battlefleld instead of Hwangsanbul.

What I observe is a general brutality of the "survivors, we don't need no stinkin' survivors" kind, a tendency towards very strong pathos and a very strong nationalism/xenophobia (but with a remarkable absence of North/South emnity).
But I guess the (subtitled) DVD availability acts as a strong filter, so I can't say what the "average" Korean flick looks like.

I'd like to see a complete affordable edition (and with subtitles that don't start to increasingly lag behind as in the 3 hour version available here) of Undercover Police Woman (TV series).

Dae Jang Geum was widely known by it's original title in Asia I think; the literal translation see occasionally is 'The Great Jang-Geum' but 'Jewel in the Palace' is more common.  HUGE hit across Asia (including Iran!) and making inroads into Europe, apparently - it is being broadcast in Russia now.  Can sympathize with the difficulty of finding good subtitled TV drama; the cheapo copy of Dae Jang Geum we have crapped out at about episode 30 of 50+ (I think it was double-translated from Korean to Chinese to English after that point; Chinese characters are not a kind language to use as a stepping-stone for textual translations).

The lead character was played by Lee Young Ae, of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance fame (I assume you've seen some or all of Park Chan-Wook's 'vengeance trilogy'?).

I think you are not far off on "average" Korean movies, because it's a relatively small industy (I'm sure you've noticed the same actors in many films).  Bang on re: pathos - Koreans are notorious for it, but I haven't noticed an excessive amount of nationalism/xenophobia, at least if taken in context (anti-American [military] sentiment in modern settings as per 'The Host' - also a good example of pathos in Korean film - and anti-Japanese sentiment in historical films is probably to be expected).  Well, not compared to Hollywood anyways, especially considering this is the Hermit Kingdom we are talking about.  ::)

ASS relates to ASA as DNS to DNA (Säure vs.acid)
Caffeine increases the pressure in the "tubes" and the salicylic acid slows the sealing of leaks (and also makes the blood "thinner").

The Koreans also seem to dislike the Chinese (though less than the Japanese) and for the same reason (just in different centuries).
One could see some parallels to Poland (Russians and Germans are not natural heroes in Polish works of art*)
I do not know that many Korean movies (have to check but probably not more than a dozen) and 3/4 are period movies.
Interestingly they have a totally different fight choreography from Chinese equivalents, much rougher and up-close and more down to Earth (less wire action, even in fantasy settings).

Last and now for an in-depth discussion of Thai movies based solely on watching Bang-Rajan ;) Post

*but Poles seem to be a red rag for Russians too, even highly sophisticated artists (Glinka, Mussorgsky, Eisenstein) become really crude when it is about Poles.
Knurrhähne sind eßbar aber empfehlen würde ich das nicht unbedingt.
The aspitriglos is edible though I do not actually recommend it.

Interesting - the general 'modern' view of the historical relationship between China and Korea is more of Big Brother and Little Brother (i.e. Korea has largely been in a position of mutual respect with China, but China has held significant cultural sway and authority over Korea, with plenty of scrapping here and there; as mentioned before Korean nationalism is very strong)  but I've not seen that many period movies. They've been at war at various times, but the Chinese have never succeeded in overruning the entire peninsula at any point AFAIK.   This is based on what I've heard from a history major, plus a few history books...

Interestingly, the majority of Korean movies I've seen have been war movies, primarily North/South cold war stuff, and like you say, there's very little North/South emnity - South Koreans don't consider themselves ethnically separate from North Koreans; most consider the division a grave tragedy for people in the North and wish for a reunited Korea (the only significant opposition to reuniting in the South is economically based, AFAIK).

I'll ransack my DVD collection and recommend some good films as I can't recall titles off the top of my head, other than JSA (Joint Security Area) which is excellent.
