There used to be marketed a breakfast drink, called "Postum".  It was a pretty bitter liquid, similar to coffee, but without any of coffee's benefits.

The Postum company eventually went out of business, and eventulally, on the store shelves there was only a single container left:

The Last Post-um

I can get you some Postum-- really several jars-- not sure how old it is though, wouldn't drink it even if fresh  but you could construct some sort of instalation art with them

When you say "poppet", I think valve:

And Last Post.

I had no idea that poppet was also a valve, I learn something new here every day Lambi.  In my family we have always used poppets to mean "Dears" or "Dear Ones".  When I went to see POTC and heard Capt. Jack Sparrow say "Allo Poppets", I just about choked on my popcorn I was laughing so hard.

It's amazing the things (mostly useless, but still amusing to me) that I learned in high school tech.  I know I learned a heck of a lot more about logic and binary math in my digital electronics course than I ever did in "math" class (fun fact: did you know that you can build any logic gate out of a collection of NAND gates?).

I remember designing a calculator with logical gates until I found the chip that did it (for my materials class in Electronic Engineering) ;).

Neat!

I designed an PC-based theatre lighting control system as a high school project (I did the hardware and the procedures to let the computer talk to it, and the other guys did the fancy pretty user interface).

I designed it to be scalable up to 255 circuits and built the boards to control 2 circuits as a "proof of concept" for class using wire-wrap.  I thought of trying to make a go selling them, but I quickly found out that the prototype stage would have been cost prohibitive for a high school student (the one local manufacturer who was willing to talk to us wanted $3000 just to set up the equipment to print the circuit boards).

255 circuits?  That's not a bad size for a small computer-fired fireworks control board, which would presumably be even easier. Not what the big boys use, but WANT computer controls! Beats a nail-board or even buttons.

(not doing shows anymore, though)

Yeah, much easier.  The tricky thing about the lighting controller was that it had to have variable output (0-12 V analog in 255 steps).  If you're triggering pyro stuff, you only need on/off.

And maybe not even any kind of memory.  So that the computer would'nt have to constantly refresh every circuit output (and so the lights wouldn't go out if the computer got bogged down), I put an 8-bit data latch on each one.  If you've only got to switch each circuit once and only once, you could probably go with something quite a bit simpler.

But alas, my hardware interface programming skills became obsolete when Windows 95 took over.  I don't even know how to reference a serial or parallel port any more, and stuff like USB is completely foreign to me.

Arrrggghhhh, you guys and your linkies...

I spent two hours reading about poppets and valves and things that linked to poppets and valves and was late to the stuff I had to go do because I mas still sitting at the computer when my ride came...

Terribly sorry, Sibling Auntie... but you do have a little clock in the corner of your screen, don't you?   ;)

Last it could've been worse - I could have posted a link to www.howstuffworks.com ... oh... wait... Post

Uncle Dan has anticipated that one. He blocks it on my computer if i have anything I have to do. It's always the first link on a new computer...

Here is a source, you haven't had your Last Post-um after all.

LOL! I was sorely tempted to Google to see if that horrible stuff was still around. (Imagine the worst cup of coffee you've ever had.  Remove ALL the caffene.  Make it MORE bitter.  Postum was worse, if my memory serves ...)  I had not seen it in the stores for years and years ... so I assumed it was kaput.

's what I get for ASSuming ... :eye-roll:

Oh, and since I'm at the end, Last of my Post

Ewww, a bitter pseudo-coffee without caffeine?  Sounds "orrible".   I'm glad I never heard of the stuff, give me my french roast any day, every day.
