Heh, we did this in my buddy's back yard in college.... (big freakin' chunks of K)
It's just a very fast exothermic reaction (as are most explosions) - I think the boom is more or less from the water hitting boil very fast plus ignition of the produced hydrogen.

And used to get to 'demonstrate' thermite for the Grade 8s.

I believe there's still a large purply-pink stain on the ceiling of one of the science classrooms at my high school.  The teacher did that demonstration, but with phenothalein (sp?) in the water to show the change in pH (IIRC - I can't actully remember what phenothalein indicates now).  The whole thing went BLOOOSH!!!!! in a huge column of water.  After, he said, "whoops.  I think I used too much."   

One of my high school chemistry books had a section on the properties of an interesting group of organic compounds and a little note (IIRC) about how they could react with some chemical (can't remember what, but wouldn't say on the interwebs) to form a nasty explosive.

On the facing page was a description of historical uses of the same group of chemicals, including certain lamps... and listed the easily-purchasable raw materials used in these lamps to produce the chemical in gas form.
