How far are Norwegian (and Swedish/Dannish) from standard German?

A lot of Norwegian words resemble German words that have gone out of use or are at least very old-fashioned.
People from Northern Germany (and, so I hear, particularly the Dutch) find it relatively easy to at least read Norwegian (at least the bokmål variant, Nynorsk looks far more like Icelandic).
Understanding spoken Norwegian is a different thing (even inside Norway. There are many very distinct dialects only partially mutually intelligible, same as in Germany).

I think for a German it is easier to learn Norwegian than English. Swedish and Danish are more difficult (The former retains far more grammar, the latter is a pronunciation nightmare). Faroese and Icelandic combine all the difficulties of German and Latin*, making them quite difficult. It's a good reminder why people find German so difficult, when one finds the same insane stuff in those tongues and has to struggle.
