As I said most ships don't have brakes (and most thrusters work only lateral). They tend to go into reverse instead.
The largest ships there are can't even easily do that since their engines are working directly on the propeller without a (shift) gear. They have to stop the engine completely, shift the cams to the other side manually and restart like one would reverse a spinning wheel (spinning as in spinning wool not just 'rotating fast'). It's usually preferred to avoid that and to hope that one sees obstacles at least 5 miles in advance for that's how far inertia will take the vessel before it stops.
Admittedly going into direct reverse at full speed would tear the engine apart.

I did never object to rockets/spaceships having any. Docking would a wee bit difficult without.
But even some surface to surface missiles employ brakes and some steer by using one-sided aerobrakes (more effective than the usual tail rudders).
