Perhaps you have the same problem as me, I prefer to sing religious music in German or Latin than in English or Spanish, or to a lesser degree, French because the meaning becomes readily apparent to me.

Indeed (old Bulgarian will do too).
There I know that I could not stomach much of it, if I understood the texts.
I get a few standard words and phrases that don't bother me and thus can appreciate the music.

Now that I'm singing in a church, the hymns have become more and more absurdist to me. More so, I'm looking for the four part versions and I have to retouch the text always (copyright trickery by the editor of the booklets for the congregation), and they repeat themselves in their absurdity so much that I'm starting to see them as a collection of words without meaning.

Some Russian (Stravinsky?) composed a work to the Latin psalms but because he did not know Latin the whole thing is said to be completely aurally undecipherable because he got the word stresses totally wrong.

There is also a Christian song by Manfred Siebald that does the same deliberately with a German text. The piece is called Kreuzworträtsel (cross word puzzle; pun intended I presume).
