The sex thing got turned around by 180° but given the ejaculations of many religious writers about Mary that was mere deception. Another parallel is that all those old godesses of love also were responsible for war (even when there was an official male war god). Not as well known today, in the past esp. the Middle Ages it was very common to call to Mary for support in war, to carry banners with her image into battles and to build Maria Victrix churches afterwards (cf. Venus Victrix temples built by Roman generals).
