At least these days. Up to the 20th century doctors were at least as likely to kill you as any disease, so those that could afford learned doctors ran a significant risk.

Actually there are still many conditions/diseases/disorders that they don't know the cause and have no treatment for. Sometimes they lie and say they do. Like insane psychiatrists.

Friedrich III von Hohenzollern, penultimate German emperor.
He was a VERY prominent pipe smoker and died of throat cancer after just 99 days on the throne.

He was seen as the 'great liberal hope' that got destroyed by his reactionary son, Wilhelm II.
Since the latter is often blamed as the main culprit for WW1 (which is nonsense), his father Friedrich has become the hero of alternative histories with no World Wars and Germany as a peaceful constitutional monarchy modelled after Britain.

There is no doubt that Friedrich was a far more pleasant character than his son but otherwise his saintly image does not fully stand up to scrutiny. He too fervently believed in his own divine right to rule and was quite hostile to the formal 'primus inter pares' position of the emperor in the imperial German constitution in relation to the other rulers of the states that made up the Reich.
And he shared his son's questionable taste in art and architecture (in some instances he was even worse).
