It's often the outsiders that deal with such stuff. The best way to learn stuff about your own language is to learn another. I learned most of my German (formal) grammar in Latin class. I also became only really aware of certain features of German by trying to learn Icelandic. I was e.g. not aware of the rules of weak and strong declension of adjectives. I automatically apply those in German without thinking of any rule, in Icelandic I have to actively think about them, i.e. become aware that there are these rules and what they are.

You forget my Latin (and once upon a time classical Greek). I had French at school but with even less success than with English. That my English is halfway decent these days had different reasons.
