Not at that time in the Middle Ages.
I believe to remember that the Black Death era was also the time when the rights of women got severely restricted in comparision to the pre-plague era.
In general what most people believe they know about the Dark Ages (mistaken as a synonym for Middle Ages) and that they think negatively off, is actually (early) Renaissance. E.g. witch trials. In the Middle Ages proper it was heresy to believe in witches, afterwards NOT to believe in them.
Not that the Middle Ages were a nice era. The Crusades were bad enough and the precursors inside Europe were even worse (in Southern France and in the Baltic region it was simply genocide. We stiill live with the results).
