That reminds me of Jim Button (by Michael Ende).
The pirates in that book also knew only one letter (singel written character) each (and one was even wrong about his), so it was a difficult cooperative task for them to write letters (written objects sent by mail).

We often have several meanings for the same word in English. That could reduce the number of words we have to learn.

My grandson seems to have learnt Bye Bye as he waved when we said it on Skype and he was not watching the rest of the  family or me. But he looked very puzzled by all his relatives shouting "look" "he's waving" "well-done" etc (he is 7 months old. I don't know the japanese for bye bye but they speak that much more that than English, so I suspect he is now bi-lingual in bye-bye.).
