I find great differences between CD players too. I have to keep in mind sometimes which CD to put into which player.

True, but if there is a transparent gap in the CD that you can play "How many fingers am I holding up?" through, I'm fairly convinced that I can visually identify the problem. Also, (as far as I am aware) this has only happened to three CDs out of 650-ish that I own, and they are all the earliest ones that I own: one is a Chess Records compilation copyrighted in 1989 but probably bought 1990 or '91; one is Sinead O'Connor's "I Do Not Want What I Have Not Got" from 1990; and the last is one of my favourite albums of all time: "Rumour and Sigh" by Richard Thompson from 1991 (which I have replaced, obviously).

Last 1952 Vincent Black Lightning post.

Hm, maybe I should check some of our oldest CDs.
Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is the first I can remember.

Last but I can't remember where that CD is Post
Knurrhähne sind eßbar aber empfehlen würde ich das nicht unbedingt.
The aspitriglos is edible though I do not actually recommend it.

That has only happened to me with CR-Rs.

Last either heavily used/treated and/or some appalling bad quality there Post

There is something called DVD rot. I assume that affects CDs too.

For what I read it's basically what we have been talking about, specifically regarding the reflective layer which in certain cases becomes susceptible to oxidation/degradation.

Last as for the data layer itself the expectation is between 25 to 100 years Post.

Please call someone in 2100 to tell us, whether this prediction turned out to be true

It wouldn't be surprising if 50 years from now there is a mad dash to rescue all the data in degrading optical disks.

Last perhaps sooner Post

An updated version of the book rescue. The switch from cloth fibres to wood fibres treated with sulphate turned paper from lasting for centuries to a few decades. And some older manuscripts suffer from the ink turning to hypercorrosive stuff over time (e.g. the J.S.Bach autographs)

Last we will have to return to clay tablets one day or put up with the losses Post

Clay tablets, or indeed writing on them, are not indestructable. We will have to find some chemical/nuclear solution.

Last personally I doubt anyone will still be around in 2100 Post

Nothing is indestructable but of all data storage methods as yet deviced by man the clay tablets have the highest life expectancy (>100K years) when not disturbed.

Last even rock carvings fare slightly worse Post

But only if few go to watch them, they turned out to be quite sensitive to change in the microclimate.

Last as a result most of those caves are now closed for regular visitors Post
