Yes but from us it's South (at least the bulk of it).
There was once a mighty empire right to the East: The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
During its golden age it was far mightier than Russia and even ruled in Moscow for some time through a puppet regime.
One reason for its downfall was an out of control filibuster rule. Imagine the US Congress with every single member having full veto power. Worse, a veto not applying just to a single bill but also to any bill already passed in the same session.

The crusades.
And Spain went downhill when the besieged Moors called in holy warriors from abroad to stem the Reconquista. The fundamentalist mercenaries took over and destroyed the tolerant (for its day) culture replacing it with something far more reminiscent of the cross-wielding fanatics on the other side of the frontline. Al-Andalus was dead long before the last Moorish city fell and the Christian thought police took over and kicked out most of the valuable citizenry, putting new and mostly incompetent people in charge that could prove their 'Old Christian' status (the Limpieza de sangre, an equivalent of the Ariernachweis of the Nazis).

We seem to be the only country in that election with no strong party on the fringe right.
If the standard pattern from the past holds true, the AfD will disappear without a trace in a few years and something similar spawn anew a few years later (and so forth).

Xenophobia is -ironically- something common to the human kind, case in point, as moronic as it may sound there are neonazis in Colombia (and Mexico, and Argentina, etc, etc).
