Sorry, no time for that. Our group* lands at Heathrow and gets transferred directly to Southampton. This day and the next we will harry the area there plus Portsmouth and Gosport. Then we check in on the ship that will carry us back to Hamburg (for the iirc 825th official birthday of the harbour). In the evening I plan to take a cheap train back to Berlin.
If we'd stay in London, I might have dropped in (if convenient for everyone of course). The way it is, I'll mainly have the choice which museum** to leave out reluctantly (too many even in that small area for the time available). I fear it will not be possible to visit both the submarine museum in Gosport and HMS Victory and Conqueror in Portsmouth. I guess I'll choose subs over sails in that case.

From what I read recently the only crime Southampton significantly differs from the average English town is a higher occurrence of rape.

I have no idea what the rape capital of Germany is currently.

What a strange statistic re rape in Southampton. Wonder why?

If you are in Portsmouth take a detour to the graveyard and look up my about 6th great grandpa back who was Port Admiral   (it has been verified)

Gatwick would have been nearer Southampton than Heathrow, and more likely cheaper flights.

It got booked as a package over a travel agency, so I have no idea about specific pricing. But it seems that BA handles all direct flights from Berlin to London in the same manner on the German side, so I guess they also go to the same London airport. I remember it was also Heathrow some decades ago when we had a school trip to Britain (that went to Coventry).

According to a spreadsheet I found sexual offenses per 1000 for 2011-12 were two (2) the same as many other cities like Camden or Manchester, but in the city of London they had three (3).

The wiki entry just said that the rape rate was higher than the average in the general area, not actually 'rape capital of the nation'.

general area - isn't the implication that rapes reported are more in the city than the countryside (where fewer people live anyway).

In any case, the number of unreported rapes is likely a much higher figure.
