Well, the English transferred all those nasty factories for sulphuric acid, explosives and other unpleasant stuff to Scotland to get them out of sight (and the smell out of their noses). Plus in case of disaster the green and pleasant land would not get spoilt. During non-disaster times the nasty emanations got carried away by the prevailing winds out to sea and Scandinavia and so did not bother the English either.
