And how do Prussians call their Bavarian neighbors?

I think (with a few exceptions) the (classic) Prussians were less hostile to Jews than their Catholic Southern countrymen. Even when they were disliked they were at least tolerated most of the time.

Last lesser of several evils Post

Edit: the evil part refers to the Prussians not the Jews

Late 1700's and Early 1800's there were plenty of laws pertaining to Jews, but does seem they were tolerated. Which throws into doubt my family history which has two ancestors fleeing Prussia (posing as Catholics) due to mass burnings in second half of 17c.

I didn't believe the bit about buried treasure anyway.

Up to the 30 Years War Brandenburg (Prussia was just a fief held by the elector and was officially Polish) had its Anti-Jewish excesses including burning at the stake. From the Grand Elector onwards Jews were not actually liked and were heavily regulated but they could rely on the government to hold up their side of the bargain (which was definitely not true in other regions). So, they were second class citizens until the emancipation centuries later but they needed not have fear for their life or property. It's a sad thing that it was the emancipation that led to the rise of the exterminative anti-semitism that got no longer justified by religion but 'race'. Unlike  e.g. in Spain baptism was seen by most in Germany as a remedy (few followed Luther in his general distrust of baptized Jews). That changed in the 19th century. First it was just the nationalism that excluded the 'people without a fatherland' (famous poets of the Wars of Liberation like Arndt were main drivers here) but then the fatal equation nation=race gained in popularity in combination with race mixing = greatest possible evil. Jews wanting to assimilate and become 110% Germans were as a result painted as the supreme danger. Although a leading voice here was Prussian (Stoecker the Hohenzollern court preacher), it was not a specific Prussian problem (and Stoecker got a gag order from above when he went too far).

I meant 18c.

But as they didn't happen, it is irrelevant.

I've always liked the Brandenburgs. Although on the whole, I don't like Bach.

Sorry, late 18th century would mean Frederick II.
I am not aware of any mass burning of Jews in Prussia under his reign.

Last Post

Edit: The notorious mass burning with a 100 victims was in 1510.
As you wrote there were very discriminatory laws in the later Prussia (Grand Elector and onwards). The main difference to other German and European states was that Prussia did not allow any unlawful acts against Jews (no progroms) and that Jews could rely on the state to keep within those laws (juicial security). Plus there was freedom to privately practice the religion (btw, Muslims were tolerated too, which was definitely unique at the time). Far from ideal but the least bad option.
