Certain tribes (I forget which) eat/smoke certain plants (I forget which) that make them vomit horribly a lot prior to putting them into some kind of euphoric state. I saw it on TV (I forget when).

That could well be the iboga ritual from Africa. The TV docu series Tribe (Bruce Parry) had a full  1hour episode dedicated to that.

Vomiting seems to occur frequently with tribal entheogen use, probably because plants tend to use chemical defenses in order to tell animals not to eat them.  Peyote and Ilex use in North America fit into this, too.

In case of iboga the vomiting is actually a feature not a bug (from the human POV). It's use is not what we would call recreational.

But the pleasure and the vomiting center are direct neighbours in the brain, so...

Ditto for the black drink. It's not necessarily the cause of the vomiting, which was often ritualized.

He who does not vomit after swallowing the red brew is guilty (and likely also dead quite soon since the stuff is not just an emetic but also poisonous).

That's what I was referring to. I just couldn't remember. An hour watching Bruce Parry vomiting is not particularly good TV.
