Actually Bach was never forgotten, the Well Tempered Clavier was known by all the major composers up to Mendelssohn's 'rediscovery', the credit goes to find his other works and perform them to the grand public.

Beethoven got to Bach before Mendelssohn.

There is quite a bit of music 'everyone' knows but few could name the composer of. That I call in essence forgotten.
And some important ones are known for exactly one short piece even when they were world-renowned in their day.

Btw, sellers of classical music have to be up-to-date which piece is used in what ad, so they know instantly what people want when the ask e.g. for the Nestlé music (Orff; Carmina Burana) or that from Schoko Crossies (Verdi; Rigoletto)

Everybody of consequence knew Bach quite well from the moment he died (and two of his sons were still active) to the moment Mendelssohn performed St. Matthew's Passion.

The standard harmony and counterpoint textbook used by most classical composers (including Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) was Fux' Gradus ad Parnassum which took Palestrina as the baseline.

Fux was the baseline for XVI century counterpoint (species) in academia even up to the XX century in certain conservatories. Harmony is a different animal, mostly because while the rules where pretty much defined by the time Fux made his treaty it was Rameau's Treatise of Harmony the main academic textbook. Yet the practical element teaching counterpoint involved the Well Tempered Clavier as the basic book of study for Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert among others, and later his chorals from the cantatas the base for practical harmony study up to this day.
