Quite a lot of persons with the same given name (even in our department) but I cannot remember a single case of given and family name being identical at the same time there. Up to 4 single digits would be able to rival standard names, above that numbers get too long.
Names can also be varied easily for distinction if necessary and carry less opportunity for accidental switches.

I strongly suspect that my real name (given + family) is unique in the world.  My family name is rare enough to start with, and paired with a unrelated-ethnicity given name, I've never found another one on the interwebs yet.

Of course short naming is not common everywhere. In places like India or (worse) Thailand a number system would do a lot of abbreviation work

In-breeding brings a particular numbering problem.

'Commoners' tend to usually have only 1-3 given names (and often two of these can get hyphenated.
A standard reason to use more than one is to satisfy relatives.
A really old Germanic practice is to use a compound name with one part chosen by the father the other by the mother. Many Scandinavian names still in use came from that.
