A real chef wouldn't taint the food; it might affect the taste.

Kitchens (according to the classical French scheme) are structured as military units, and many chefs seem to think they are little military commanders. Less formal kitchens are more along the lines of a feral dog pack; either way, dominance displays seem to be the usual order of things.

I don't run things that way, but my co-chef does to a large degree.  We play good cop/bad cop to the other cooks, or more aptly saint and sinner (which he has tattooed across his throat).

Chefs have taken revenge by tainting the food. It is said that waiters do it more often but in a less noxious way.

Oh, I'm sure it's happened, but I consider it to be in very poor taste.

Why do you assume that bodily harm is the intent. Like the classic feces baked into chocolate cake the revenge is sweetest when the victim does not realize that anything unusual has happened. The revelation can come later or not at all.

Last I hear such stuff happens more often in high-end restaurants where the underpaid staff is confronted on a daily basis with the arrogants 'haves' Post

If you get your hide tanned, you tend to get rather pissed off. With leather it is the other way around.
