I got the impression that many of those low votes were due to false expectations, i.e. commenters were disappointed not necessarily because the movie was bad but because they expected something different. Be honest, ifI told you nothing else but that Christian Bale played the lead in a movie, Kate Beckinsale his love interest and there was Andy Serkis in a supporting role, what kind of movie would you expect? Very few would guess a modest, grit-under-the-nails production from Denmark.
I do not say that the movie is a revelation or a must-see but if you stumble on it, I'd say you should give it a try. Just do not expect an epic.

That actually makes sense, I imagine most of the people who watched the movie were driven by Bale and not the classic art-house movie goers that would be more understanding.

The one on youtube seems to be full-length but it seems that there is another version circulating esp. in the US that has been butchered by cutting nearly half an hour and re-editing the carcass.
So keep away from any version  that runs 90 minutes or even shorter

Those must be the butchered versions then. The one on youtube is 104 minutes. I can't check my DVD since I have no idea where in my huge chaotic collection it currently resides (due to mountains of books I cannot reach major parts of it).

But still often wrong or listing several obscure versions (by country) but not the main one.
The 104 minutes version makes internal sense while the shortened (+ recut) doesn't (according to user comments).

Slight warning: there is quite a bit of (natural*) nudity in the film. Common for Scandinavian films but potentially shocking to a US audience
