The mouthpiece for the bassoon is an oversized, double reed, oboe one, so no much difference there, and the traverse flute principle is similar to a pan flute but harder to do.

Actually a new development. Even in WW2 generals often led from the front (and those were the most successful ones).
The Israelis also had disproportionate losses in the medium to high officer ranks in their wars (for the same reasons). As small as Israel is, staying off the battlefield would have been difficult anyway
