Full heat kills quickly and (according to what I heard) the body shuts down even before that. Not talking a slow roast here. Drowning takes a while and the body struggles.

Sudden anoxia (removal of oxygen from the air, replacing it with inert gas) has a good reputation for a painless exit because unconsciousness occurs within seconds without the victim even noticing. Lots of lethal accidents have resulted from the latter.

Well, to my knowledge what kills you on a fire (or pyre) is the smoke, which is painful to inhale. Heat OTOH... there is an execution technique used by drug barons that consists in hanging the victim by the feet, soak him with gasoline and ignite. Because smoke goes up there is no asphyxia, and the victim takes a few more minutes to die in complete agony.

In gasoline murders it is not the heat that kills but the destruction of the skin. The system shock (the actual cause of death) sets in only slowly that way.
Burning at the stake was an elaborate scheme where the length of the agony could be tightly controlled from close to instant to slow roast.
I do not say it is the ideal way to go (although jumping into a vat of molten steel or an active volacano has a certain style) but, if done properly, by far not the worst.
Cyanide is quick but (according to toxicologists) makes up for it by extreme discomfort in that short time.

This mickeymousing can actually be quite dangerous because of potential unnoticed anoxia.
So after every draw of helium one should breathe again normal air or after just a few circulations your internal oxygen supply will run out and you will drop.
