I do not know whether H₂S was such a case, phosgene definitely was. Phosgene has the 'advantage' to act slowly and only after a hiatus of a few hours. The main problem would be to keep all the sputum from spoiling the manuscript. Posion gas developers always live with the risk to get a lungful of their own stuff and are thus usually prepared. Carl Duisberg even promoted the effect a tiny amount of some of his products had on his own health to boost his sales to the German (WW1) miltary.
A curious case was Scheele's discovery of hydrogen cyanide (Blausäure). His discovery should have killed him but instead he gave a vivid description of this interesting substance (esp. its smell) and lived for some ore years (killed primarily by the unhealthy microclimate in his lab with constant changes from cold-wet to hot-dry and back).
