Well, you are doing better than me. I have no idea what "binders" mean in this context. Is it yet another US distortion of the English language?

One of my sons sort of indicated he thought Romney would be a competent president which shocked me out of complacency. I really have no idea if he was serious.

I think he meant 'lists' in folders. It was not just names but resumés. What he probably wanted to say was 'whole binders/folders of resumés of qualified women' indicating that it was much material, no just a post-it note with a few names. Then he rushed through it and dropped the seemingly redundant parts (again, notice the notable pause/stumbling before 'women').

Btw, unlike other observers of the funny dinner speeches both candidates gave yesterday I found Romney's material to be better. Some jokes were walking a fine line but imo they did not come across as just nasty (as RW 'jokes' usually do). And I did not find his rendition of the jokes to be awkward (for a non-professional). I think Obama, although far more likable and in possession of an actual sense of humour, is not a great joke teller and his material seemed to be more flat to me and less coherent (more a list then a theme). Imo it was the same last time with John Son of Cain clearly winning the joke contest.
But maybe the idea of political humour and what works and does not is just different over here.
