I always reverse* on side mirrors. My Dad had an HGV licence and taught me that way.

Over here mirrors on forklifts are not forbidden but very uncommon and their use is discouraged (cf. bicycles, same principle).
What would be extremly helpful is a display that shows the direction the wheels are pointing (in cars too) or at least a signal that gives left, right, neutral.

I think an analogon of the rudder angle indicator (Ruderlagenanzeiger, nice German word) for wheeled land vehicles would be very helpful.

Those are as generic as they come, a camera you attach at the back, and a small screen you place in front, frequently with a suction cup.

There are systems that are specifically for (esp. closed) forklifts. Makeshift contraptions may not fit with existing regulations and thus not exonerate you, should an accident happen. With mirrors this is specified. Not forbidden but it does not remove the mandatory look backwards.
