I've been holding the torch for Buffy and Willow for years now. I sent a lot of letters to Sunnydale, explaining my involvement as a rogue demon hunter in the wilds of Hertfordshire, but neither have been forthcoming with either commentary or words of praise. I even sent one to Giles, care of the Watchers' Council, but it must have been lost in the explosion.

I am aware of the idiom but the dehairing of witches (complete body, not just head) was often literally done by holding a torch to them.
As we know from the Bible, hair is power. Also hair could be used to store and hide magical ointments or powder, so all of it had to be removed.

Makes me wonder about torture and the reaction of a portion of the population in regards to it. I was watching The Proposition (good one BTW) and there is a lovely scene in which a teen is flogged to death, and the reaction of the town watching was a mesmerized one.
