Hm, what about Australia (where most whites are descended from petty thieves   )?

Maybe it was to Europe's advantage that so many different cultures had to compete and a general assimilation as in the US could not take place.
I grow ever more pessimistic about the level of 'culture' and cultural knowledge in the European population. Globalisation plays a part in that I'd think.

IMO being cultured is almost part of the class system in the UK, except the very top class don't need to be. It's also why nouveau riche can be such a damning term.
