I guess these days some metal can be used but it traditionally goes without. In contrast, that other thing* (at least editions for professionals) these days is made almost exclusively out of metal.
Btw, in Europe the LPWB was for a long time seen as closely attached to a certain profession that was low-rank but also extremly fashionable.

The profession traditionally making use of the LPWB can be found in the Bible in prominent position (without the LPWB mentioned though).
In the Bible it seems to be a primarily male profession. When it became fashionable in Europe, the image was female. As far as the LPWB is concerned there seems to be a bias to showing primarily men with it and rarely if ever females (although there is no reason to it that I can see, it should be gender neutral).

You got the profession right but it is not the staff (nonetheless a good guess).
And just in case you suspect me of splitting hairs, it's not a slingshot either.

It's not a totally strict tradition but the LPWB would be assoiated more with shepherds than swineheards. The latter would (traditionally) use something that may contain something very similar to the LPWB but attached to something more visible that originates from the pigs.

Maybe some vibes from me. I am working on a saga centering on a völva (seeress, lit. staff-carrier) who disguises her staff as a spear.
It's the prose sequel to my long alliterative ballad Óltheresmál/Hristarismál, following the adventures of Ólthere's daughter Gerdr.
Maybe I will even try to translate it into Icelandic (Gerðs saga örhandar = Saga of Gerdr Scarhand).
