I do not know which of both legitimate spellings Griffin has or will choose (maybe both).
But both versions lead to different hints, e.g. the 8 letter version will get you to the liquids with one letter changed, but the way to the bad guys and the profession requires a double letter change from the 9 letter variant.

color and colour are both legitimate variants of the same word while ballon and balloon are actually different words. We are talking about the former type. The difference in the LPWB is whether a certain letter is doubled or not.
