I think in the 19th century students paid fees directly to their professors which formed an important part of their income.

the *table* */table* starts and stops a table.
the *tr* and */tr* start and stop a row
the *td * and */td* start and stop a column.
replace * by  [  or ] as appropriate

the column code is a bit dodgy - you might do something like *td*    */td*  ie. spaces to give enough space between columns. There's a lot of trial and error in constructing a tidy table. So you might write
   *td* Griffin */td* *td*        */td*  *td*Swatopluk*/td*

to get the two names with a set number of spaces between them.
