There's a video game called Crusader Kings my friend plays. It's basically a nation-state strategy game based on history (at least at first, your actions and random generators alter things). What's unique about it is that instead of playing as one particular ruler (like the Civilization games), you play as a dynasty. Not even sure you can truly lose, I think the worst that happens is you get sent off to be a nobody ruler of a tiny county somewhere.

Anyway, the point is that while war and conquest is part of the game, politics, marriage, heirs, and inheritance are a large part as well. Basically, the Habsburgs were haxxors. One family effectively ruling all of (or at least the most powerful countries in) europe for what, 100+ years? Madness.

Btw, should this movie make it to the US, I recommend it.
The opening may not do it full justice but the film looks like at least an order of magnitude more expensive than it was.
