I've loaded shells of that calibre on a heavily-armed watercraft.

well, it was a barge full of fireworks, but it was still a 12" ball of black powder

Don't know about that but it could be the shockwave damaging their swim bladder.
If that's the case sharks should not be affected.

They did some experiments of the sort in Mythbusters, they didn't shoot live fish but placed some already dead fish and also measured the shockwave from the shots and after consulting an ichthyologist they reached the conclusion that the shockwave would damage many internal organs in fish, more than enough to kill them.

Last I imagine it would kill small sharks too Post

I'm hung on whether "catch and release" is worse than "catch just to eat". I know being caught stresses fish, but how much do they feel it? Not being a fish, I couldn't say, and I am loathe to anthropomorphise them to give an answer. This is why i'm not an angler.

Compliments too? Congrats for two smoke-free months

Where catch-and-release really becomes cruelty to animals without any anthropomorphizing is the pool angling competition.
A fish may be caught a dozen times or more in a short period of time.
Well, of course noone forces the stupid critters to bite and bite again.

Last throw those anglers into the moray* pool Post

*actually not that effective. They are not good at biting big things.

Aggie

Fish mortality concerns me as much or more than cruelty with catch-and-release; I'll usually keep any fish that's badly hooked, even if small. I hate releasing a fish with the prospect that it may die anyways.  I've started using smaller hooks where I suspect that it'll only be small fish biting.  Still, given an ~80% chance of survival vs. certain death? Presumably the fish will choose to be released.

I love fishing, but I do have some reservations about the effect on the fish (and the worms for that matter - I prefer fishing baitless when possible). The one consolation I have regarding eating fish is that nearly EVERY fish is both predator and prey throughout their life cycle; the fish that are content sucking slime generally won't take a hook. Violent death is normal for fish, and any large sport fish that has survived the million-to-one odds to make it to a venerable age has almost certainly done so by slaughtering countless others.

Sibling Zono (anon1mat0)

The centers that process strong emotions (love, fear, anger) are in the most primitive parts of the brain, so without anthropomorphizing it is perfectly reasonable to assume that the base emotion is felt by the animal in a similar form.

Last we may manage the emotion differently but the physiological response is quite likely the same Post
