Just watched a TV programme about the London Tube (aka Underground aka Metro in other cultures) System- this week's focus was about how the Tube employees cope with incidents where someone jumps, falls, or throws themselves in front/under of a tube train. The employees refer to this as "one under".

I have not much sympathy for people choosing that way to leave the mortal plane. It shows both a lack of compassion (for the drivers* and potential bystanders) and of foresight (even at high speed death is rarely instant).

*it should be mandatory to put warnings in jobs ads because the probability to get involved in a suicide by train is very high and the psychological trauma is often severe.

In Paris the new/renewed stations have a security glass enclosure with doors to prevent that.

Newest tube stations here have the glass barriers. There seems to be no programme to put them in older stations. Stupid.

But it's impossible to block all access to all train tracks.
Btw, jumping in front of a train near a station is extra stupid because the train is at low speed there.
Some cities keep incidents secret in order to avoid copycating. Ironically the gruesome details seem to encourage people to choose that exit option too. Vienna found that not reporting train/tube/streetcar suicides in the media decreased the number of incidents significantly.
